Learning Resources
The basic statistical concepts and methods that we cover in the course have not changed much in over 80 years. (Yes, this pre-dates modern computers. In fact much of modern statistics was developed in the later 1800’s and early 1900’s). There is an abundance of learning materials covering introductory statistics (YouTube, websites, textbooks). I recommend that you be proactive in seeking out information (Googling is a good strategy, if you know how to use the right key words). I will be providing websites, YouTube videos, and open access (free) textbook as we progress through our learning modules. Here are some places to start your journey into learning statistics.
Recommended Reference Statistics Book
OpenIntro Introduction to Modern Statistics - published by the OpenIntro team
- Their mission is to make educational products that are free, transparent, and lower barriers to education. They also provide supporting resources, such as slides, videos, and more.)
This will be our primary resource.
The textbook (PDF) can be downloaded for free or contribution (you can skip the optional contribution, by setting the price to $0) at;
leanpub.com/imstat
If you want a personal hard copy, you can purchase at Amazon for $20 at this link
It is also available to read online for free through the internet at https://openintro-ims.netlify.app/
Additional High Quality Statistics Learning Online Resource
Another free online resource that we will using is University of Florida’s Biostatistics Open Learning Textbook available here.
Communication with Each Other and Professor
I have set up a course site at Campuswire, which will be our home base for communication.
- Sign up using your @student.ohlone.edu email account through this class specific link at Campuswire
- I think you first have to register for an account with Campuswire, and then verify your account by obtaining a verification code by checking your Ohlone email.
- After your account is verified, then you need to enter the Class Code 4624 to finally enter the class.
- Campuswire’s Instructions for Joining a Class
- I recommend downloading the app to your phone and setting up notification preferences so you will be notifying of new posts or questions.
Integrated Statistic Learning Environment
Our primary statistical tool will be an online space called ISLE (I call it isle - as in a small Island). ISLE was developed by Carnegie Mellon University’s Statistics and Data Science department with the goal of having an accessible interface for all to be data scientists. NOTE - I have not upload any material to ISLE yet - so there is no immediate need to sign up for ISLE, I’ll let you know when we will be using this site
Follow these steps to obtain access to ISLE.
- You will need to sign up for ISLE.
- Click: Go to Login page and login with your email and password
- Click on Menu. (Three Horizontal Bars in upper left corner to left of Open Your Courses)
- Enroll will appear, click on it.
- Then select your section. It will be of the form F21-MATH-159-SEC# (you might not know the section, but WebAdvisor has that section detail)
- If your section doesn’t show up, you wil need to log out and log back in (this should refresh the list)
- You’re in!
- Bookmark the ISLE Website
Interactive Statistical Applets
The web has enabled a new set of resources to learn statistics through interaction called applets.
- ArtofStat Web Apps
- Dana Center Web Apps
- StatKey
- Rossman/Chance Applet Collection
- StatPREP Little Apps
YouTube Channels
Here are some YouTube channels that I will be referencing in our modules. If you find a channel that you really like and it is not listed here, please let me know so I can add it to the list.
- OpenIntroOrg
- STA 270: Applied Statistics
- zedstatistics
- Wild About Statistics
- Dr Nic’s Math and Stats
- Cassie Kozyrkov
- StatTeacher
Additional Textbooks
If you have access to an actual statistics textbook, you might find that quite useful. An actual physical textbook is a great way to have the material at your fingertips. Here are some other digital textbooks that I found and can recommend.
- openstax Introductory Statistics
- Saylor Academy’s Introductory Statistics
- Foundations in Statistical Reasoning
- LibreTexts’ Statistics Textbooks
- PennState’s Stat 200 Website
- U of Florida’s Biostatistics Open Learning Textbook
- Statistical Thinking for the 21st Century
- Data Analytics: A Minimal Book Example
- ModernDive - Statistical Inference via Data Science
